Body Donation

Know how Donating One’s Body can Save Many Lives and Bring a Change in Society

My dear friends, today, through this blog I would like to impart my opinion on body donation. Donating one’s body is the most significant kind of donation. In some foreign countries, it is a common practice to donate one’s body, and it is imprinted on the donor’s license so that if he dies in an accident, his/her body is donated to the medical center.

Unfortunately, this tradition is not practiced in India yet. Therefore, I am here to spread awareness about donating your body. If we are Hindu, we burn the bodies; if we practice Islam, we bury the corpse. The dead body eventually gets degraded. On the contrary, if you donate your body, you can help many medical students in their studies. Also, if a person donates his body, some of his organs can also be used in the transplant purposes. A person can donate his limbs, eyes, liver, lungs, heart, and pancreas among other few body parts. It takes a lot of courage to donate one’s body, and it is a great sign of generosity. There is no other thing more satisfying than the fact that someone else will live because you donated a part of your body.

Without understanding anatomy, a medical student cannot become a perfect doctor. Therefore, in order to produce better medical experts in the future, we need better anatomy classes, and it is only possible if there are real subjects to study for the students.

If you donate your body for the purpose of helping students in their studies, you help a minimum of 20 students in pursuing their careers in the medical field. And by doing this, you have not only helped the students but also the society, the advancement in medical science, and many other families.

I am very proud to say that many people have donated their bodies to the NIMS University. The person who donates his/her body is respected a lot in the medical facility and by the students. We also call the family members of the donor and we pay our tributes. We also have a wall in our anatomy department where we hang the photographs of the deceased people who have donated their bodies. Also, we plant a tree in the name of the respected person, and the family members visit the spot and water the plants once in a while. The best thing about planting a tree in the name of the deceased person is that it becomes a token of memory for the members of the family. And they find solace in the fact that the person is still with them in the form of that tree.

The students feel grateful too by looking at the photograph of the deceased person in the anatomy department and they always feel thankful to the person through which they are able to become a doctor.

I want to give rest to my words by saying that we must stop this tradition of burning and burying our corpses. And it is my humble request to all my brothers and sisters, all the members of the society to donate their bodies, and spread awareness regarding the same.
